My why ...
Why is it that the thing most dreaded by so many — speaking in public — is the very thing I crave?
That question led me down a path of study and writing to uncover and share the science behind what I have experienced.
As a geographer, I never thought I would dive into anthropology, neuroscience, and psychology (admittedly I am no expert in any of these), but in these fields of study lie the keys of effective communication in general, and public speaking in particular.
Through my career as a geographer — as the Geographic Information Officer for NYS, as well the Executive Director of the New York State Geospatial Advisory Council (2014 – 2022), and Chair of the National Pandemic GIS Task Force Chair(2020 – 2023) — I learned how small changes to my own communication styles could make a huge impact.
I continued to refine my skills in my role as coach to a youth mountain bike race team, teaching wilderness guiding, and serving on national committees for Scouting creating policies and curriculum for wilderness travel, skiing, and mountain biking.
Once I began to understand why I often reach flow state in front of an audience, I felt a real desire to help others experience the same … whether your audience is room of one thousand, a hiring manager, or someone important to your life who needs to know your authentic story.
And that’s what my work here at WintersGeo is all about. This is where I offer tangible, actionable support and consulting through:
